Jane’s First Day of School

1 Sep

Yesterday was Jane’s first day of school.

At 2 years, 7 months, my little baby went off to preschool.

I thought there would be tears on somebody’s part:  mine or hers.  Or possibly both.

But instead, it was one of the best days we’ve shared so far.

Jane was giddy with excitement and couldn’t wait to get dressed, put on her little backpack and bound down the front stairs to clamber into the car seat she usually refuses to even go near.  When we arrived at the school parking lot, she nearly pulled my arm out of the socket trying to get me to “Hurry up!

So many people have asked whether I am sad, but it’s quite the opposite.

I’m happy.  Happy that the day went off without a hitch.  Happy that my little Jane was so excited about her first day of school.  Happy that my plan of preparing her for this day by reading countless books about going to school and watching re-runs of “going to school”-type television episodes seems to have worked.  Happy that I chose to stay at home when I did.  Happy that the past two months after I quit have been purposefully spent creating an atmosphere of love and happiness and security in our little nest.  Happy that she’s ready to fly.

And off she goes . . .

The pictures are beautiful! You’ll have to tell me what camera you have- I bought the SLR Canon Rebel and am pretty happy with it as a beginner- but your photos are always so crisp! And, I’m glad you both were thrilled! I won’t lie- I bawled like a baby this year. Mine started school last year but the hours were so short, it wasn’t so tough- This year, the 5 days a week, 5 hours a day routine kicked in- which beat the 10-12 hours a day in daycare, but still. It broke my heart. hahaha! Yay for Jane! And Yay for You!

Your little girl looked so happy on the first photo! And she looks so adorable with her cute backpack. My daughter will start pre-school next June (school here starts in June) and she will be 2 years old 7 months at that time too. They grow up so fast.

Hi Janelle! I totally just assumed that you live around here because of the company you work for. Obviously they are all around the world! Well, you have a bit of time before your little girl goes off and I am sure by then you’ll both be used to the idea. I cried in the car and all the way to work when I dropped my daughter off at daycare for one month at 12-13 months of age. This time was so different. We were ready and that made all the difference. If we weren’t, I think I would have changed my mind and cancelled enrollment. Nice to hear from you again 🙂

That’s fantastic! My daughter starts kindergarten tomorrow, and my son starts preschool in two weeks. We’re all excited/anxious/terrified/overjoyed about the whole thing. So glad to hear you and your sweet girl had such an awesome first day 🙂

Good luck with all of the changes! Kindergarten is the real deal. I can’t even imagine it at this point, but know it will be here in a flash. Reminds us to linger in each moment of every day 🙂

Oh, I love those pictures! She is so sweet! I love that you’re “happy that she’s ready to fly.” My daughter starts preK in a week and will be going five days a week every afternoon so that will be an adjustment for both of us, but like you said, we are both ready. 😀

I wish I had remembered to take video! I used to think video was a bit geeky, but it really captures the moment. Hope I can remember all the squeals in the years to come. Good luck when you daughter starts pre-K! On the up side, you’ll have free afternoons? But it will be very different, I know. 🙂
